Implicit Bias Toolkit Overview

Overview

Globally, evidence of implicit bias awareness is progressing including within the security industry. ASIS recognizes the opportunity to leverage organizational resources and networks to provide tools and platforms promoting the continued conversation of implicit bias and how it impacts our daily personal and professional lives. The Professional Development Community (PDC) was tasked with developing training materials and resources readily available to security management leaders looking to advocate for excellence within themselves and their teams, departments, and organizations.

Increasing knowledge and exposure to one’s negative implicit bias adjusts automatic thinking patterns and reduces discriminatory behaviors and explicit attitudes. To effectively perform the functions of a security professional, one must possess solid communication skills, be a good problem solver, pay attention to detail, and demonstrate sound decision-making. Unrecognized implicit bias can impact these critical skillsets and the ability for security professionals to effectively add value to an organization.

It is understood that facilitating implicit bias discussions and delivering training on this topic may be challenging. Within the Implicit Bias Training Toolkit, you will find resources to assist in creating an implicit bias training program, best practices for facilitating difficult discussions, and implicit bias training content to use in workshops or small huddle sessions. As with any organizational training, ASIS and the PDC recommend partnering with key stakeholders within your organization to collectively approach implicit bias training aligned with respective organizational cultures and objectives.

The PDC Implicit Bias Training is designed to be a fluid library with materials being added and updated to stay current with relevant content and guidance. As an ASIS member, your feedback is genuinely valuable to the PDC and training developers. For more information, questions, or to share feedback, please contact the Professional Development or DEI Communities.
