Hello fellow Security Professionals and Certified Protection Professionals. As you are all aware, the Certified Protection Professional (CPPⓇ) is considered the “gold standard” certification for security management professionals and demonstrates your knowledge and competency in seven key domains of security. Globally recognized as the standard of excellence for security management professionals. In a March 2021 communication from ASIS, they touted a 66-YEAR COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE
ASIS International is the leading association in advancing security worldwide, promoting excellence and leadership within the profession and is deeply committed to advancing and reinvesting in the industry. This year (2022), I am the Chapter Chairperson for Greater Fayetteville and my Certification Chair, Mr. Perkins, researched that there is approximately 34,000 members in 155 countries and there are approximately 8300 CPPs worldwide with 180 CPPs in North Carolina. These certifications are not easily obtained and in fact, there are recertification fees and Continuing Professional Education (CPE’s), that must be completed to maintain certifications.
I hope this post brings some dialogue about why we do not have a better handle on safety and security in our school systems. We have the Bank Protection Act of 1968 (BPA), and the purpose is to discourage robberies, burglaries and larcenies committed against financial institutions. Underlining the successful relationship between banks and their customers is a simple yet essential element: TRUST. Bank customers expect their transactions to be both secure and confidential, and banks honor that trust to garner consumer confidence and grow.
At our embassies, US Marine Security Guards work closely with the State Department and DSS to protect and safeguard people, property, and sensitive information at U.S. Embassies and consulates around the world. Being a Marine, I will tell you that they are not really there to protect the diplomats. They are there primarily to protect secret information (Classified). Marines are there to protect and if necessary, destroy and classified information so it does not fall into enemy hands.
If we have safeguards to protect our money and information, why are we not creating things to harden the target for one of the most valuable people (Students) that have a direct impact on the future of our country? With 8300 Certified Protection Professionals around the world, that is a copious amount of skill and experience which should be leveraged to provide security in depth concepts to a future school before just slamming them up. If the entire USA is too large of a footprint, let us begin with our 180 CPP’s in North Carolina and take the lead for the rest of the nation to follow.
