Crisis, Crowds, and Cameras: When Security Becomes the Story [ASIS Webinar]

When:  Aug 11, 2026 from 12:30 PM to 01:30 PM (ET)

Imagine these scenarios:

  • A news van pulls up, a reporter walks over, and a camera starts rolling. The first question is, “Can you tell us what’s going on?” The security personnel, CSO, or CEO has not been briefed and does not know.
  • You’re managing a crowd when it suddenly starts growing. Dozens of cell phones are recording. Images are being livestreamed, shared online, encouraging others to join, and viewed far beyond those present.
  • You think the security incident is over. Initial reporting has accurately told the story, and the scene has cleared. Then new videos and posts begin appearing online that are edited, taken out of context, or even AI‑manipulated by others, and public perception shifts in ways that do not match what actually happened.

For today’s security professionals, these are all real possibilities and increasingly common. Cameras, social media, and public scrutiny are now part of the operating environment. Incidents can quickly become public narratives in real time, often before facts are fully confirmed or official messaging is ready. While organizations provide policies, procedures, and approved responses, professionals at every level still need the judgment, confidence, and skills to navigate these moments effectively.

This session goes beyond the public relations script. Through three realistic security scenarios, we explore what happens when security, media, and public attention intersect, and why preparation, communication, and skill development matter more than ever.

Join Ellen Steverson, Career Management & Advancement Expert and Author, and her guest, Amanda Green, Communication Strategist and former Television Producer, as they examine what security professionals should understand when media attention becomes part of the incident. Amanda provides the communication perspective, including how interactions with reporters can influence developing situations, and Ellen connects these insights to skills, training, and professional considerations that can help strengthen judgment, communication, credibility, and readiness under pressure.

At the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

  1. Understand effective approaches for interacting professionally with reporters and cameras during developing situations.
  2. Identify individual skills, training needs, and leadership or policy considerations that can improve readiness, credibility, and response under pressure.
  3. Explain how preparation and intentional skill development can strengthen professional resiliency and career management momentum.
