  • Drone Swarms - A Developing Threat to Critical Infrastructure

During the opening ceremony of the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, the world was amazed by the visual display of over 1800 drones synchronized drones flying over the venue.  An incredible display of art and technology and an amazing example of the possible.

In the hands of malevolent actors however, this technology represents a developing threat vector for public and private critical infrastructure.    The potential for multi-drone terrorism poses an increasing risk.  This discussion will examine the current threat, trends in terrorist adoption of drones, potential risks to critical infrastructure, and policy considerations for reducing the threat.

On Thursday, August 26, 2021 at 3:00 pm EDT, the Critical Infrastructure Community of Interest will hose a presentation on the developing threat posed by synchronized drone swarms.

The speaker is Zachary Kallenborn, a Research Affiliate with the Unconventional Weapons and Technology Division of the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START), a Policy Fellow at the Schar School of Policy and Government, an officially proclaimed U.S. Army "Mad Scientist," and Senior Consultant at ABS Group. Journalists have written about and shared his research on drone swarms and autonomous weapons in the New York Times, NPR, Forbes, the New Scientist, and numerous others.

Please check the Critical Infrastructure Community of Interest calendar for details on logging in.
