The digital world in which we work, play, and increasingly live, isn’t a safe place. Sure, there are plenty of places on the planet where your security would be much more compromised than on your regular social network. But that doesn’t mean that one slip of the button, one “yes” clicked when you should’ve clicked “no”, and your whole life can’t be turned upside down.
If you’re wondering why there are so many cybersecurity schools that seem like such a solid choice for a future career path, the answer is obvious – cybersecurity is the career choice of the future. Here are a couple of reasons why it might be a great choice right now.
No Lack of Work
Sadly, it’s hard to see a time when a cybersecurity consultant will not be in demand. As mentioned, the internet is filled with bad actors and that’s not going to change anytime soon. So if job security is a strong motivating factor – and it usually is when choosing a career – cybersecurity has it in spades.
The only way that could change would be if we developed tech that makes things such as online transactions or passwords completely secure. But you know that even if we managed to create something like that, it will only be a matter of time before someone creates better tech and starts using it for nefarious reasons.
The Salary Is Good
As usually when dealing with relatively new and exotic fields, you’ll notice a discrepancy between the supply and the demand. Currently, the demand for top-notch talent outpaces the supply of it, making it easy for the people who are at the top of the game to command great salaries.
But the rest don’t have it that bad either. Businesses would much rather invest in cybersecurity than suffer the losses – both monetary and in prestige – from cybercrime. Overall, you can expect a six-figure yearly salary, which isn’t bad at all.
It’s Exciting and Evolving
You may come across the same threat multiple times. But it’s equally as likely that you’ll have two completely unrelated incidents in two consecutive days, with neither having anything to do with the other.
The truth is that you never know what’s waiting for you when you come to work. Yes, you have the training and the skills to deal with common problems, but cybercriminals are innovative. They are creative. They don’t plenty by the rulebooks, and when they color outside the lines they take you with them. You have to be good to parry them, and you have to be excellent to stop them. It’s exciting stuff.
It’s Relatively Easy to Get Into
You can’t have a computer and say that you’re a security expert, but it’s not that hard as you might think to get certifications. At the very least, you can enroll in online cybersecurity classes that will help you become every bit of an expert as if you sat through the classes in a physical classroom.
The implication here is that becoming a cybersecurity expert is a great way to transition from an existing career that doesn’t satisfy you. If you’re ready to put in the effort into doing all the coursework, and you’re willing to keep bettering yourself and learning, there’s nothing that can stop you from becoming a great cybersecurity expert.
